Those are very thoughtful remarks about the story. I suspect that you are on the right track. Certainly there is a sense of solemn momentousness in the telling, and whatever MacDonald is aiming at, he's aiming high. Again, the difficulty for me was the distance between the broad gesture at existential import and the bizarre details of the story.

I humbly thank you for your complimentary remarks about my page. I extend my sincere appreciation to anyone who takes the time to read.

That's logical and sensible. We knew we wanted to leave the northeast and move to the southwest, but weren't sure exactly where in the southwest … (and I was from California and knew that was not an option). We booked a trip starting in Phoenix, then driving north through Arizona, then east into New Mexico and down to Albuquerque, from which we'd fly home. Turned out Albuquerque was it. Didn't expect it or plan it. We moved there a couple of months later. One of the key differences between Arizona and New Mexico is that NM is nearly all high desert – where we live it's 6,000 feet in altitude, and UNM is around 5500. Phoenix is practically at sea level. That's one thing. The other is that a great neighborhood and shopping area surrounds UNM, which is situated in the heart of Central Ave., the old Route 66. It's a a very large campus, with 26,000 students. But a small feeling in each building and the higher level classrooms. (I took a grad level writing class there.)
