I have 4 different models of DVD Toshiba. It works reliably and are happy with them. The problem is not super easy, but not too much work and everything. But an important role in the development of 2, I tried. For disc DVD + R, you can manually add markers. Well, once I figured out how to set everything up, a few weeks later I came to use the DVR to watch a DVD and there was no sound! I called the manufacturer and they said that some times when the DVR isn’t used on a consistent basis, it needs to be unplugged and replugged to reset itself. Sure enough that took care of the problem. However, it is a little annoying to have to do something as silly as that for something you paid good money for. Not sure if mine is just a lemon or if this is a consitent problem with the device.
Great Quality DVD Recordings!
I highly recommend this DVD/VCR recorder. The recorded shows on DVD have great quality. Far better than a VCR. Did my first VCR tape to DVD conversion today and the quality was great. It can’t improve a bad VCR recording, but it can match it. and it was very easy. One button dubbing. I haven’t used the built in tuner because I have cable so don’t really need it. but i like the versatility of having it if I need it.
Good value and performance
Setup isn’t the easiest thing with a vintage 1994 analog TV, but once successful the results are impressive. We have a 25″ Magnavox TV (one of the last U.S.- and union-made TVs) with something like 600-line resolution, and the cable signal fed through the Toshiba’s digital tuner and clean electronics makes the TV look crisper and sharper than ever. The key to successful setup was using the composite video cable (yellow connectors, supplied with the Toshiba unit) and switching the TV from “antenna” (cable) input to “VCR-AUX” (composite video) input when using the Toshiba unit. We hope that the Toshiba lasts as long and continues to perform as well as has the TV!
Works OK, but if I could do it over again…
I bought this unit for the purpose of watching (cable) TV, VHS tapes, and DVDs through a ceiling-mounted projector. I’m running component video cables through an AV receiver, and the AV reciever is hooked to the projector through a component-to-VGA cable (I don’t have the cash to get a 1080 HDMI projector!) I get a good clear picture from DVD, VHS and the TV. The only complaint I have is with the QAM tuner. I subscribe to a very basic cable service, but there are three digital channels and several digital music channels that my analog TVs don’t pick up. I do have a DVD/TV combo unit that does pick these channels up, so I hoped the Toshiba unit would do so as well. It does pick up the music channels, but not the three digital channels. Another review here says the QAM tuner is designed to *not* pick these up as a copy protection mechanism, so that is diappointing.
If I could go back, I would not buy this product. Instead,I would buy a tuner card for my old PC and use it as an HTPC (a while back I hooked up a HauppaugeHauppauge 1199 WinTV HVR-1600 Internal PCI Dual TV Tuner/Video Recorder with IR Receiver and Blaster TV tuner to my PC and found it did pick up all of the available channels). I could install a Blu-Ray drive and I would be all set except for the ability to play VHS. I already have a VHS-to-DVD recorder, so I really wouldn’t have a need for this Toshiba unit at all. Once I get the HTPC put together, I plan on hooking the Toshiba unit up to an old TV we have sitting in front of my wife’s treadmill. Maybe that treadmill will see some use.

Just don't get a Dell–the quality sucks.
I've had good experiences with Toshiba laptops, but this was many years ago.
Macs are great because they can run Windows programs/games and Mac stuff. If you don't anticipate a need to run Mac stuff or if you don't really like Mac OS X, a Toshiba is probably good enough. ThinkPads are nice too.
As a rule of thumb, the absolute best that you want is always going to be $4000, no matter what time period you're in. In the mid-90s, the top of the line laptop (a Toshiba that I had) had a 90 MHz Pentium and a CD drive; it cost $4,000. Nowadays, the absolute best computers are still $4,000.

Go to Toshiba and they have tech page enter your model # or serial # I forget which
And ask iris or what ever their gene's name is. If that don't help go to the down load up date page and see if they have a solution there, if some thing kinda matches hit what is this and they completely describe the problem the update will fix.
